![]() I would say the grammar level is N4, and they use enough kanji that it's not unreadable because of too much hiragana. All of them are written in a very comprehensive manner, with mostly easy grammar that can be understood after finishing Genki 1 & 2. The three series I recommand you to try are all from the same collection, and I've been slowly collecting them all because they are brilliant and I will probably use them at some point later for tutoring. Of course I'm not saying that if you want to start with Yotsubato! you shouldn't, but if you want something that you can actually understand while getting accustomed to reading real Japanese, I suggest trying something else. But it's actually not such an easy read in my opinion, because it's full of colloquial Japanese and jokes that need a cultural background. Yotsubato! is probably the most suggested first book I have seen on this sub and on the Japanese learning Internet community in general.
